Applying the Balm of
Gilead to your Life

Jeremiah 46:11 (ESV)
"Go up to Gilead, and take balm, O virgin daughter of Egypt! In vain you have used many medicines; there is no healing for you."

Where is Gilead, and what is its balm? I did some research and discovered that Gilead was an area east of the Jordan River well-known for its spices and ointments. The "balm of Gilead" was a high-quality ointment with healing properties; therefore, the Bible refers to it metaphorically as an example of something with healing or soothing powers.

There are many references to the "balm of Gilead" in the Scriptures. It has inspired many literary and cultural allusions, including references in "The Raven" by Edgar Allan Poe and movies such as "The Spitfire Grill." Notably, "There Is a Balm in Gilead" is an African-American spiritual that compares the healing balm to the saving power of Jesus, the one true treatment that never fails to heal our spiritual wounds.

Karen Clark-Sheard sings "Balm in Gilead" on her 1997 album "Finally Karen." It reminds me to spiritually apply the "balm of Gilead" (Jesus) to my life on a daily basis.

Will you, as the reader, join me in doing this? I know it will be a blessing to you.
